A GIANT BOAT TO CLEAN UP THE OCEANS: YVAN BOURGNON'S SEA CLEANERS PROJECT TO BE PRESENTED AT INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF INVENTIONS OF GENEVA

Yvan Bourgnon, world-famous for his solo circumnavigation of the globe and for crossing the North West passage on board a small catamaran with no accommodation, amongst other sailing exploits, is not only a gladiator of the seas, but also a keen environmentalist. On a stand of honour at the next International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, held at Palexpo from 11 to 15 April, he will present his next project, The Sea Cleaners, to the press and visiting public.

The Manta, a quadrimaran, will be a veritable seafaring factory, 70 m long, 49 m wide and 61 m tall. The size of the boat matches the scale of the challenge, namely on each outing to harvest 600 m3 of plastic close to the mouths of major rivers, where 63% of waste is dumped, sort it and take it back to shore for recycling or further processing.

The Manta is a shining example of a non-polluting vessel, propelled by hybrid and solar technology, wind energy and sails. More than just collecting rubbish, the Manta will be a strong, unique, physical symbol of the fight against this type of marine pollution.

Yvan Bourgnon's project will benefit from maximum exposure at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva on a central stand that promises to be both didactic, fun and interactive, with a kind of 'box' enabling visitors to immerse themselves in the problem spotlighted by the project. Totem poles will broadcast 3D images of the project and an ad-hoc backdrop will plunge the visitor into this still largely unknown world. A model of the boat will cap the display.
